What is a bomboniere?

A bomboniere is a small trinket or token of appreciation given as a thank-you gesture often following an event such as a wedding, christening, bridal shower or baptism. Traditionally given in Italy to mark life's milestones, the word originates from an Italian phrase which translates literally to "bonbon" or "sweet treat".

Bomboniere are similar in concept to favours but differ in two key ways: Firstly, they tend to be of higher quality with more attention to detail when compared with favours that usually only represent one type of gift (such as chocolates). And secondly, bomboniere are usually heavily personalised and created specifically for the recipients.

Traditionally constructed with inexpensive materials like ribbons and lace, or beads and shells for a more rustic look, Bomboniere are designed and packaged as individual items (most commonly in boxes). They can normally consist of three items: a gift item such as porcelain cake servers or spoon sets; confetti – either brightly coloured paper fillers or sugared almonds; and finally the envelope containing the visitors' names. Many Italian families keep their bomboniere as sentimental mementos of big life events so you can expect your guests to treasure these special gifts.

Though not a home grown concept in every country, the idea of bomboniere has swept many nationalities looking to bring something extra special (and traditionally Italian) to their big day. Nowadays, bomboniere are customised rather than being bound by tradition – allowing hosts total freedom when it comes to design ideas and colour themes.
